How do I reach Ajanta and Ellora from the Golden Triangle?
Fly from Delhi or Jaipur to Aurangabad/Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (MAR/IXU airport). Flight time is 2hrs.
From Aurangabad/Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Ellora is 30 km (45 mins by taxi) and Ajanta is 107 km (2.5hrs by road).
What is the difference between Ajanta and Ellora?
Ajanta (30 caves, 2nd c. BCE - 5th c. CE): Exclusively Buddhist. Famous for extraordinarily well-preserved murals and frescoes depicting Jataka tales and the life of the Buddha. Set in a dramatic horseshoe gorge.
Ellora (34 caves, 6th-11th c. CE): Multi-religious- Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain caves in one complex. Famous for rock-cut sculpture, including the Kailasa Temple (Cave 16), the world's largest monolithic rock excavation.
Which caves are closed on which days?
Ajanta Caves are closed on Mondays.
Ellora Caves are closed on Tuesdays.
How much time is needed at each cave site?
Ajanta: Minimum 4- 5 hours for a thorough visit. The site is spread out along a cliff face- comfortable footwear is essential.
Ellora: At least 4-5 hours. The Kailasa Temple alone deserves 1.5- 2 hours. Carry water-the site is largely open and exposed to sun.
