Tiger Reserves in Rajasthan to be closed on Wednesdays from 1st Jul,23

Tiger Reserves in Rajasthan to be closed on Wednesdays from 1st Jul,23

Starting July 1, all four tiger reserves in Rajasthan will remain closed to visitors every Wednesday. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) introduced this weekly closure to give tigers a day of respite and reduce pressure on wildlife and reserve staff.

The order applies to all four tiger reserves in Rajasthan: Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in Sawai Madhopur, Sariska Tiger Reserve in Alwar, Mukundra Tiger Reserve in Kota, and Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve in Bundi.

Diya Kumari, an NTCA member and Member of Parliament (MP), proposed a weekly day off for tigers during a meeting in Delhi on January 3. Other members widely supported her proposal. The NTCA later adopted the practice and issued nationwide guidelines for its implementation.
Rajasthan is now the sixth state to implement this practice, following West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Jharkhand, and Bihar.

Mr Arindam Tomar, Main Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden govt of Rajasthan, commented on the decision: “Based on an order by the National Tiger Conservation Authority, we have decided to close all four important tiger reserves in Rajasthan every Wednesday from 1st of July,2024 onwards.”

Rajasthan Tiger Reserves to Remain Closed Every Wednesday

Tourism activities, including safari tours, will not be permitted in these reserves on Wednesdays. Visitors who have already booked safaris for Wednesdays after July 1 will receive a refund. Authorities have already started processing refunds for the affected bookings.

The constant flow of tourists and continuous safari activities have placed additional pressure on wildlife and caused unnecessary stress. A weekly day off is expected to give tigers and other wildlife much-needed relief while strengthening conservation efforts.

By closing its major tiger reserves every Wednesday, Rajasthan is taking an important step toward prioritizing tiger welfare and promoting sustainable wildlife tourism across the state.

Why Were Rajasthan Tiger Reserves Closed on Wednesdays?

Tiger reserves are sensitive ecosystems where wildlife needs sufficient space and minimal human disturbance. Safari tourism plays an important role in wildlife awareness and the local economy, but frequent vehicle movement and tourism activity can also place pressure on forest habitats.

The weekly Wednesday closure was introduced as a way to provide a regular break from tourism activities. Officials said the measure was based on directions from the National Tiger Conservation Authority.

A weekly closure can provide several potential benefits:

  • Reduced vehicle movement inside reserve areas
  • Less disturbance to wildlife
  • A quieter environment for animals
  • Time for forest staff and tourism infrastructure maintenance
  • Better management of protected areas
  • Support for long-term wildlife conservation

The decision also followed a broader practice of introducing weekly tourism holidays in tiger reserves in several Indian states. Rajasthan became one of the states to implement the Wednesday weekly off for its tiger reserves.

Which Tiger Reserves in Rajasthan Were Covered?

The 2023 announcement applied to four tiger reserves in Rajasthan:

1. Ranthambore Tiger Reserve

Located in Sawai Madhopur, Ranthambore is perhaps the most internationally recognized tiger reserve in Rajasthan. The reserve is famous for its Bengal tigers, dry deciduous forests, lakes, historic ruins and the iconic Ranthambore Fort.

Ranthambore attracts wildlife photographers, nature lovers and international travellers looking for a memorable tiger safari experience.

Under the 2023 announcement, tourism activities were scheduled to remain closed on Wednesdays from 1 July.

2. Sariska Tiger Reserve

Located in Alwar district, Sariska Tiger Reserve is another major wildlife destination in Rajasthan. Its landscape includes dry forests, grasslands, rocky hills and water bodies.

Sariska is particularly popular among travellers from Delhi and the National Capital Region because of its relatively convenient accessibility.

The Wednesday tourism closure was also applicable to Sariska under the 2023 order.

3. Mukundra Tiger Reserve

Located around Kota, Mukundra Tiger Reserve is an important wildlife landscape in southeastern Rajasthan.

The reserve provides habitat for several species of wildlife and forms an important part of Rajasthan’s tiger conservation network.

Mukundra was among the four Rajasthan tiger reserves covered by the Wednesday closure announced in 2023.

4. Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve

Located in Bundi district, Ramgarh Vishdhari is one of Rajasthan’s newer tiger reserves and forms an important wildlife corridor in the region.

It was also included in the Wednesday weekly closure announced for Rajasthan’s tiger reserves from July 2023.

What Did the Wednesday Closure Mean for Tourists?

The announcement meant that tourists planning wildlife safaris in these reserves needed to avoid Wednesdays when making their travel plans.

Tourists who had already made advance bookings for Wednesdays after 1 July 2023 were reportedly to receive refunds, according to officials quoted at the time.

For travellers planning a Rajasthan wildlife holiday, it therefore became important to check:

  • Safari availability
  • Reserve-specific opening schedules
  • Safari zones
  • Entry timings
  • Advance booking requirements
  • Seasonal restrictions
  • Local forest department guidelines

Because wildlife tourism regulations can change, travellers should always confirm the latest safari schedule before finalising their itinerary.

How Can Tourists Plan Around the Wednesday Closure?

The easiest solution is to plan your safari on another day of the week.

For example, travellers visiting Ranthambore can arrange their itinerary so that the wildlife safari falls on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday, subject to current availability and applicable regulations.

A typical Rajasthan itinerary could combine wildlife with heritage destinations.

Example Rajasthan Wildlife Itinerary

Day 1: Delhi – Ranthambore
Day 2: Ranthambore Tiger Safari
Day 3: Ranthambore – Jaipur
Day 4: Jaipur Sightseeing
Day 5: Jaipur – Delhi

Alternatively, travellers can combine Sariska with the Golden Triangle:

Delhi → Agra → Jaipur → Sariska → Delhi

This allows visitors to experience India’s famous monuments as well as its wildlife.

Best Time to Visit Rajasthan for a Tiger Safari

Rajasthan can be visited throughout much of the year, but the wildlife experience varies by season.

Winter Season

The winter months generally offer pleasant weather for sightseeing and safari activities. This makes the period particularly attractive for travellers who want to combine wildlife with Rajasthan’s forts, palaces and cultural attractions.

Summer Season

Summer can be extremely hot, but dry conditions can sometimes make wildlife easier to spot around water sources. Visitors should be prepared for high temperatures and follow all safari safety instructions.

Monsoon Season

The monsoon brings changes to safari operations, and some tourism zones may have seasonal restrictions or closures. Therefore, travellers should check the latest information before booking a safari during the rainy season.

Why Wildlife Conservation Matters

Tiger reserves are not simply tourist attractions. They are protected ecosystems that support tigers, leopards, deer, birds, reptiles and numerous other species.

Responsible tourism can contribute to conservation by generating employment, supporting local communities and increasing awareness about wildlife protection.

At the same time, visitors need to respect the environment. During a safari, tourists should:

  • Never feed wild animals
  • Avoid loud noises
  • Do not litter
  • Follow the instructions of guides and forest officials
  • Maintain a safe distance from animals
  • Avoid disturbing wildlife for photographs
  • Remain inside designated safari vehicles
  • Follow reserve-specific rules

Responsible tourism helps ensure that future generations can enjoy India’s wildlife as well.

Tips for Planning a Rajasthan Tiger Safari

If you are planning a trip to Ranthambore, Sariska or another Rajasthan tiger reserve, keep these tips in mind:

1. Check the Latest Safari Schedule

The Wednesday closure discussed in this article relates specifically to the policy announced in 2023. Safari and zone schedules can change due to conservation requirements, weather, forest department decisions and other factors.

2. Book Your Safari in Advance

Popular reserves such as Ranthambore can experience high demand, particularly during peak travel periods.

3. Keep Your Itinerary Flexible

Leave some flexibility in your Rajasthan itinerary so that changes to safari timings or zones do not affect your entire trip.

4. Follow Wildlife Regulations

Your guide and forest officials are responsible for maintaining safety and protecting wildlife. Always follow their instructions.

5. Combine Wildlife with Heritage

One of the biggest advantages of travelling in Rajasthan is the ability to combine wildlife experiences with forts, palaces, temples, markets and cultural experiences.

Rajasthan: Where Wildlife Meets Heritage

Rajasthan offers a unique combination of wildlife, history and culture. A single trip can take travellers from the tiger habitats of Ranthambore and Sariska to the magnificent forts of Jaipur, the Taj Mahal in nearby Agra and the historic streets and palaces of Rajasthan.

For international visitors, this combination makes Rajasthan one of India’s most compelling destinations.

At Ghum India Ghum, travellers can plan customised India holidays combining wildlife, heritage, culture and local experiences according to their interests and travel schedule.

Conclusion

The decision announced in 2023 to keep Rajasthan’s four tiger reserves closed to tourism activities every Wednesday was introduced as a conservation and tourism-management measure. The four reserves covered were Ranthambore, Sariska, Mukundra and Ramgarh Vishdhari.

For wildlife enthusiasts, the announcement highlighted an important aspect of responsible tourism: protecting wildlife sometimes requires giving forests and animals a break from regular tourist activity.

If you are planning a Rajasthan wildlife holiday, always check the latest official safari timings, zone availability and closure rules before making your booking, as regulations may change over time.

Plan your Rajasthan adventure wisely, respect the wilderness, and make your wildlife journey a memorable one.
